Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED

Tutors assist English-speaking individuals who want to learn or improve their reading, writing, or math skills. The overall goal is to bring students to a literacy level that will enable them to secure more meaningful employment, help their children with homework, and enhance their ability to read in their daily lives.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The ESOL program pairs a trained tutor with a student wishing to learn English or to improve his/her speaking and comprehension of English. Increasing English-language skills will improve the learners’ potential for employment and enable effective communication, greatly increasing their quality of life and their ability to be contributing members of the community.

Financial Literacy

When we think of literacy, we usually think of mastery of the language, but there are many other kinds of literacy which are just as important to the community. One of these is financial literacy. The focus is to help adult learners gain the ability to use knowledge and skills regarding basic money management, budgeting, credit, taxes and banking services to manage their household financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial stability and well-being.

GED Workshops

Once a week a tutor meets one-on-one with her/his learner or instructors meet with small groups of learners who are preparing for the GED or other tests that require a certain level of basic education skills. Please contact us if you are interested in getting help or assisting as a volunteer.

Jail Literacy Program

The Literacy Council currently works within the Sarasota County Jail both with juveniles tried as adults and with the general population. We bring our one-on-one tutoring to inmates looking to improve their literacy or obtain their GED. Education is a proven tool to prepare inmates for success upon their release.

Programs

WorkPlace Literacy

The Workplace Literacy Program provides custom-designed curricula and instruction that relate directly to the improvement of literacy skills needed in the workplace.  LCS builds effective partnerships with area organizations, community groups, and businesses by providing job-related workplace training to keep employees safe and productive in the workplace while increasing their knowledge / skills for their current and future employment needs.

One-On-One Tutoring

The adults served by LCS programs are diverse in gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, educational level, and age. However, all of them are committed to learning or improving their English language communication skills. In one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions, trained volunteers work with individuals on their identified literacy goals.
